Zambia, The Zambezi River and Victoria Falls

Posted on by Ben

Crossed the Zambezi River on a very ropey looking ferry (even ropier immigration), bear in mind this is the border crossing between Botswana and Zambia, this is the only point at which you can cross the river – hundreds of trucks and lorries filled with cargo all wanting to cross – i literally mean hundreds, and they take each truck 1 by 1 across the 200 meter stretch of water in this tiny ice-cream tub ferry. Take a look here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/25/KazungulaFerry.jpg

We settled at a campsite in livingstone, zambia called the waterfront and went for a dip in the pool. We are getting quite good at putting up our tent. We booked onto an activity immediately – a trip to Devil’s Pool, truly an amazing experience and one not to be forgotten for a very long time. The trip started with a boat ride to Livingstone Island – this is a patch of land that appears during low tide, and the zambezi river flows around it and over the falls which form the side of livingstone island. We got a welcome drink and walked through the dry bush to the very top of the falls, we then swap across the top of the falls towards Devils Pool – this is one of the pools of water which forms at the top of Victoria falls, and feeds one of the smaller waterfalls during times of low water level (the dry season). We then got to the edge of the pool, climbed a rock and jumped into the pool right at the edge where the water cascades down over the victoria falls. The guide then had us lean over right over the edge of victoria falls and look down while he held our legs (not sure if the insurance covered us for this but all’s well that end’s well). We then had a three course meal and unlimited booze under a tent at the top of the falls – now we’re really on holiday!

Arrived back for another swim in the pool at our campsite, and then headed out for a sunset booze cruise, along with our tour leader and an Australian girl we met on our tour. By booze cruise i literally do mean, all you can drink, and we drunk the boat dry! Then afterwards got even more smashed in the campsite bar.

Next morning, we both did different activities, Ben went white-water rafting on the Zambezi River – this is a grade 5 white water river – the highest grade possible (again bit of a botch on the insurance as we’re only covered up to grade 3) and Tam went on a horse-riding safari trek across the Zambezi and Victoria falls, and guess which one of us came back with an injury….. that’s right it was Tam, but she was ok, just a small cut on her leg… baby Tam.

Ben hasn’t got the pictures from the white water rafting yet, but they’ll be coming soon!

The following day we took a Helicopter ride over the falls, both the Zambian side and the Zimbabwean side, fortunately no one else booked onto it so it was just the two of us in our own private flight over the falls, the pilot took us around and around and told us various facts, and showed us where a new waterfall is forming which will extend the falls even further in about 250 thousand years time. He then flew us over the national park in which our camp was situated to see if we could spot any animals, we saw a heard of buffalo and several elephants, seriously, elephants are everywhere here!!! Below is a picture we took from the helicopter…

Bye for now,

Ben and Tam. xxx
